Trade with Dayf at Cardboard Junkie

One of the best things about writing this blog besides getting in touch with other card collectors, has been trading cards. It has been the staple of this blog since I stretched out the arm of collecting friendship. I sent a few cards to a well known card collector and blogger Dayf a little while ago but nothing in comparison to what he sent back. A whole raft of Jacoby Ellsbury cards including the highly allusive 2007 Topps Update Jacoby Ellsbury rookie card, numbered as 100, which is a super duper short print.
The 2007 Topps Update and Highlights checklist designates card number 100 as belonging to Phillies third base Abraham Nunez. Then Topps decided that, they needed something special and chose Jacoby Ellsbury although he was included, as a rookie, in the 2005 Bowman Heritage set, a card that Dayf included as well.
All the cards Dayf sent are great additions to my growing Jacoby Ellsbury collection. Not be outdone Dayf included some brilliant 'Vintage' Red Sox cards. How can I possibly match this?
Thank you.

Trade with Shane from Massachusetts

Thank goodness there was a Red Sox fan reading when I posted this,

The package Shane sent just grew and grew. What started as a few from my wants list developed into a monster. There are at least 600 Red Sox here, all off my wants list, but Shane didn't stop there. He felt that that wasn't quite enough, so he included some in person autographs, not 1, but 8 in-person autographs.

The autos included were;
1986 Topps Jim Rice
1987 Topps Rob Woodward
1996 Donruss Mike Stanton
1997 Best Wilton Veras
1997 Bowman Chris Reitsma (who include the personal Phil 4:13 with the auto)
1998 Score Brian Rose
1998 Team Best Dernell Stensen
1999 Fleer Ultra Darren Lewis

A very humble Thank you to Shane for the excellent trade.

Swapping cards with Waxaholic

Firstly, very impressed with the 'calling card'. I feel as if I'm dealing with a real professional. Waxaholic has now become my most prolific trading partner. We have been trading packages across the Atlanic for almost 2 years. Sorry it has taken so long to get this posted as well.
Brian sent along some, dare I say 'vintage' 1974 Topps

and some equally sweet 1976 Topps.

Thanks again Big B. I search in earnest to clear you 'soccer' wants list.

All quiet on the trading front and a rare find.

Originally I intended to title this 'Trade with Tony'. But it has been an unusually quiet couple of months in regard to trading. The rare find?.... not the Okajima relic....a trade partner in the UK.
There is a small but growing band of baseball cards collectors in the UK. I was fortunate enough to make contact with Tony from Newport, not Rhode Island but in Wales. He has been reading the blog and decide that was time we made contact.
It appears as if Tony and I have fiercely competed for some of the more desirable baseball cards on ebayUK. Mind you there is plenty of undesirable rubbish too. Such as a seller who listed the entire 1991 Fleer set, 'the yellow one,' not as a single lot but as individual cards at 99p per card not including the 70p postage per card. Browsing through the baseball card selection on ebayUK is like wading your way through a pool of custard.
Tony is a set collector foremost, he is pursuing the 2010 Topps Heritage at present. Fortunately he also collects the San Fransisco Giants. He managed to trim about 60 cards off my wants list and included the Okajima Career Best relic. We also arranged to purchase a box (or two)of 2010 Allen and Ginter and see how we fair collecting the base set.
Thanks Tony for the trade and looking forward to the 22nd of June.

Trade with Big B from Waxaholic

Brian from Waxaholic and I have traded cards across the pond for a good 12 months now. The package that arrived from Brian the other day contained cards that recognised that I have more than one pursuit.
Firstly he sent these 4 Jacoby Ellsbury cards for Pursuit of Jacoby.
This chronicles my attempts to collect all the Jacoby cards with no specific print runs from 2005 to the present.
Secondly 2 Junk Wax packs for Pursuit of Red Sox.
Any packs I manage to beg, borrow or buy are opened here in search of Red Sox.
And lastly 4 cards for the Pursuit of 1980's Topps.
This was my first and a long term pursuits, but thanks to Brian and a host of other generous collectors might be coming to an end very soon. There are now only 3 cards I need to collect the whole 726 set. In an era that was devoid of short printed, different coloured parallels and mini refractor relics, it has been a quest that was attainable.
Many thanks to Brian for this much appreciated package.

Trade with Punk Rock Paint

There is list of required reading for baseball card blogger's. PunkRockPaint is one of the blogs at the top of this list. It is a highly original and ingenious blog. Travis's photo-shopping skills are brilliant, take a look at the Lost retro set to get an idea of the lengths he goes to to make them as authentic as possible. Trade with Jason from The Writer's Journey

Midweek this big box of cards arrived from Jason of The Writer's Journey. It was in exchange for some Reds cards and a few packs of football cards for his sons. My side of the trade can be seen here.

The box had to sit unopened on my desk, which was a bit of a strain, but for good reason. As my wife would put it ,'I would be lost to the world..' if I had opened it to see the baseball goodness inside. It had to wait, school is finishing for the summer break (summer? wet, windy and cold at the moment) and a fellow teacher and I run a Movie and Animation club at school. Our end of year project is to make a Dr Who episode.

Last year our episode titled 'Parasite' lasted 12 minutes. We filmed for about 6 weeks and the editing took about two weeks. The school caretaker made a life size 'Tardis' for us to use in the filming. He topped that this year by making our very own 'Dalek'. We had delusions of grandeur but still left ourselves 6 weeks of filming and 2 weeks of editing. It just wasn't enough time. The big red carpet event was on Friday and the movie wasn't finished until late, late, then early Friday morning and we hadn't burnt the film to DVD yet. My colleague swears by a drink called Red Bull, a caffeine rich stimulant drink that is meant to keep you awake and alert way beyond the time your body is telling you sleep! The movie ended up being 28 minutes long, suffice to say with a few too many continuity errors which are being fixed this weekend. The children enjoyed the film, we enjoyed making the film. However because of this distraction I didn't get to open the box of cards until today.

There are far too many cards to list. Thanks to Jason a huge chunk of my Red Sox wants list has disappeared.

Whatever happened to Trot Nixon by the way?

Trade with Adam from Thoughts and Sox

Here's one way to clear off a large number of cards from your wants list.
I won't list the cards that Adam from Thoughts and Sox sent recently as there is just far too many. He did include this 2008 Topps Jacoby Ellsbury gold foil. It looks like any normal run of the mill 2008 Topps card but the writing is in gold.
However, for some reason the card that was of great interest to my children was a 1987 Sportflics of Wade Boggs. Why am I surprised? The modern child has access to 10o's of TV stations, all the music in the world at their finger tips, an inexhaustive supply of video clips on you-tube and they were interested in a 'moving' card of Wade Boggs. Who would have thought that something as simple as this would hold their interest. Surely they had seen this sort of thing before-Yes they had, but they still found it mildly fascinating. I should drag out some of my 3D Star Wars cards that are tucked away in the loft somewhere. Now those are great cards.
Thanks Adam for the large brick of cards that I can clear off my wants list.

Trade with Justin from Is this a Wasteland?

Another great Jacoby Ellsbury card came this week from Justin at Is this a wasteland-No it's Tampa Bay Sports. Trade with Rod from Padrographs

My efforts to secure some Jacoby Ellsbury cards took a turn for the better recently when Rod from Padrographs contacted to say he had two Jacoby cards-would I be interested? Yes! Definitely. What he didn't say was that he would include this signed Ellis Burks card. If you haven't already viewed Rod's blog he is a prolific and successful Through the Mail autograph collector. One card went out five times to five different players. I admire that sort of dedication. This was our first trade and I will go out on a limb and say not our last.
So what other Red Sox cards did Rod send from Portland Oregon ?(the home state of Jacoby Ellsbury, which in itself is pretty cool)
These:

1986 Topps #233 Steve Lyons

Trade with Big B from Waxaholic

Big B aka Brian from Waxaholic and I have been exchanging cards since we were both reading 'A Pack A day' and pre writing our own blogs. Big B shared his penchant for Premiership Football (soccer), the Braves and Lucy Pinder, but not necessarily in that order. I have been able to find some Braves he needs and Premiership football cards and stickers. Lucy Pinder on the other hand is proving to be far more elusive. Sorry Brian she doesn't return my calls and waiting outside her house has gotten me into more trouble than I need. Rest assured football stickers are on their way.
Brian recently sent an excellent package of cards that included:

1959 Topps #161 Frank Baumann
1959 Topps #384 Dave Sisler
1959 Topps #473 Mike Fornieles
1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier #88 Tim Naehring

1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier #124 Mo Vaughn
1996 Topps complete Red Sox set!
2003 Bowman #BDP92 Chad Spann
2006 Bowman Chrome #113 Josh Beckett
2009 Topps #50 David Ortiz black border
2009 Topps #112 Hideki Okajima black border
2009 Topps #267 Michael Bowden black border
2009 Topps Finest #19 Josh Beckett
2009 Topps World Baseball Classic #9 Daisuke Matsuzaka
2009 Topps World Baseball Classic #37 David Ortiz
2009 Topps World Baseball Classic #47 Dustin Pedroia
and two packs which I will open at Pursuit of Red Sox.

Thanks Brian, the '59 Topps I know are difficult to come by and it was great to receive Canadian cards from a Canadian. Were the World Classic cards from a separate set or inserts in Topps?

Heaven Sent. Trade with Mario from Wax Heaven.

The blog Wax Heaven doesn't need the kudos of being named on this blog. It is the most read of all baseball card blogs. As Mario rounded the corner of 1million visitors, I had just past 3000. That tells you something about the difference. We may be at different ends of the blog spectrum and an ocean apart in geography but that didn't stop Mario from sending some unbelievable cards.
Firstly a 1933 Goudey of Bob Smith. Amazing. A sweet card that will take pride of place in my collection.

An A.J.Griffn 2009 Upper Deck Series 2 game used and autograph card.

A Chris Hernandez 2009 Upper Deck Series 2 Game Jersey

A Matt Riley 2000 Upper Deck SP Autograph and

A Manny Acosta 2009 Upper Deck Series 2 Gold numbered 52/99.

These are awesome cards Mario. Thanks for thinking of me and for your generosity.

Trade with Matthew from Heartbreaking Cards Part Deux

Here is the second helping of the selection of cards sent by Matt from Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius. Matt has just started another blog and I wish I had thought of it, as it is a brilliant idea for a blog. The premise to rip at least one pack of every card product ever made. I presume it is not limiting itself to just baseball, so anything goes. Have a look at Pack to be named later.
Other than that here are the cards Matt sent.
